Nous sommes très heureux de présenter la première exposition personnelle de l’artiste Valentine Esteve, diplômée des Beaux-Arts de Paris en 2020. Peinture, broderie, sculpture, l’artiste explore des techniques parfois contradictoires pour traduire une perception singulière de la lumière et du temps qui passe, en volume ou en matières.
Lors de sa résidence en Corée en 2019, Valentine Esteve avait pour habitude de faire de longues marches du coeur de la ville jusqu’au sommet le plus proche, documentant sa progression et condensant ces images en de grandes peintures rouges. A Séoul encore, fascinée par le nombre de caméras de surveillance, elle repère celles qui ont été déviées de leur objectif et qui enregistrent, inlassablement, des images inutiles. Elle leur consacrera ses premières broderies (cf Useless Recording, 2020).
Capter le temps qui s’écoule, les sensations qui passent, les instants fugaces qui ont le gout d’éternité, voilà ce qui anime l’artiste.
Valentine Esteve s'attarde sur le bruissement des végétaux et l’ombre insaisissable qu’ils projettent sur les murs de la ville, dont elle tire de grandes toiles quasi monochromes; sur l'intrusion du soleil dans son atelier, découpé par la forme des fenêtres, qu’elle incarne dans des sculptures minimalistes en acier; elle s'intéresse encore au temps de réflexion précédent ses nouvelles séries, qu'elle transpose dans les 10 broderies « Secrets », toutes en ombres, lumières et jaillissements de couleurs…
Toutes ses séries, bien que formellement différentes, sont intimement liées à la fois dans leur rapport à la lumière, qui les structure dans une délicate radicalité, et dans le temps long et la répétition du geste, que l’artiste valorise dans sa pratique.
“Au temps heureux des cadrans solaires, il n'y avait pas l'ombre d'une exactitude”*, et c’est bien dans ce temps indécis et précieux que Valentine Esteve nous invite à plonger, le temps de l’exposition.

We are pleased to present artist Valentine Esteve’s very first solo exhibition at Galerie Lazarew.
Graduated from Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2020, the artist explores sometimes contradictory techniques to translate a particular perception of light and the passing of time, in volume or in materials. Painting, embroidery, sculpture are the main tools used in her creative action.
During her residency in Korea in 2019, Valentine Esteve used to take long walks from the heart of the city to the nearest summit, documenting her trip and condensing these images into large red paintings. In Seoul again, fascinated by the amount of surveillance cameras, she spots those that have been diverted from their lens and that tirelessly record useless images. She will dedicate her first embroideries to them (see Useless Recording, 2020).
The time that elapses, the passing of sensations, the fleeting moments that have the taste of eternity: this is what animates the artist.
Valentine Esteve dwells on the rustling of the plants and the elusive shade they project on the walls of the city, from which she draws large almost monochrome canvases; on the intrusion of the sun into her workshop, cut by the shape of the windows, that she embodies in minimalist steel sculptures; she is still interested in the time of reflection preceding her new series, which she transposes into the 10 "Secrets" embroideries, all in shadows, lights and bursts of colors…
All her series, although formally different, are intimately linked both in their relationship to light, which structures them in a delicate radicalism, and in the long time and repetition of the gesture which is valued in her practice.
“In the happy time of the sundials, there was no shadow of accuracy”*, and it is in this indecisive and precious time that Valentine Esteve invites us to dive, the time of the exhibition.
